Why Transmedia Storytelling Matters More Than Ever: How to Build Worlds That Last
Creating Stories That Cross Media, Genres, and Audiences.
In 2024, nine of the ten highest-grossing films were based on existing intellectual property. This is a clear sign of where storytelling is headed. The future belongs to creators who can adapt ideas across multiple platforms, expand their worlds beyond a single medium, and engage audiences in more immersive ways than ever before.
From The Last of Us to Disco Elysium, today’s most impactful stories are designed to live across formats: TV, film, games, books, even live experiences. This is the essence of transmedia storytelling: creating interconnected narratives that deepen the audience’s connection and allow them to engage from multiple entry points.
One of the leading voices in this field is narrative designer and transmedia strategist Kurt McClung, whose “world-first” approach has shaped over 100 fictional universes in AAA games, film, TV, animation, and original IP. His philosophy is simple but profound: Worldbuilding is not just about crafting backdrops for a plot. It’s about designing living, flawed worlds that can spark debate, invite participation, and hold cultural relevance over time.
In a recent episode of the Future of Film podcast, McClung discussed how a strong fictional world can align creative teams, open up new storytelling possibilities, and build communities around a shared universe. He argues that while characters and plot are essential, they’re no longer enough on their own.

For creative professionals looking to put these ideas into practice, McClung will be leading Creating a Transmedia Strategy for Film Professionals, Helsinki Film Lab's upcoming live online course running 26 August – 11 September 2025. Designed for screenwriters, producers, game writers, editors, and storytellers of all kinds, the course covers:
How to design immersive, interconnected worlds
Techniques for adapting stories across formats
Building a pitch-ready transmedia strategy
Collaborating effectively across industries
What makes it especially valuable is the combination of live teaching, hands-on exercises, practical toolkits, and direct feedback from McClung himself. Plus, of course, the chance to connect with peers from around the globe.
